Service Units
Emergency
Wrangell Medical Center has a dedicated
emergency room equipped with a portable cardiac monitor and defibrillator as well as with
several Medevac units for transfer to special and/or trauma centers. A physician is on
call 24-hours a day.
Cardiac Care
In addition to the services described in "Emergency" and "Special
Care", Wrangell offers cardiac stress testing. Appointments may be made through Dr.
Patel.
Dietary
The food services manager is fully trained to prepare special diets as ordered by a
doctor. To ensure that personnel have current information in a changing field, a dietician
regularly visits the hospital to discuss diets and menus and to consult on problem cases,
as well as holding outpatient clinics.
Laboratory
The facility features a full service laboratory staffed by three nationally certified
Laboratory Technologists, and meets all federal and state regulatory requirements.
the laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments which are all Y2K
compliant. The laboratory also offers pre-surgical autologous blood services for
off-site and in-house surgeries. Microbiological testing for domestic water is also
available.
Obstetrics
Local organizations, such as the Hospital Auxiliary, have provided highly specialized
equipment for the labor and delivery rooms. Included are a radiant heater with infant
heart monitor and an incubator for intensive care. Although there are three bassinets in
the nursery, a new mother may choose to have her baby "room-in".
Physical Therapy
A physical therapy room is equipped with a Hydro Tub whirlpool bath, an ultrasound heat
treatment machine, exercise equipment, hot wax, and hot packs.
Service is provided by a full time Physical
Therapist.
Special Care
A cardiac, intensive care room is equipped with a modern heart monitor-defibrillator, an
EKG machine and other special equipment, including a central monitoring system.
Surgery
Elective surgery is performed at Wrangell Medical Center in a completely equipped
operating room. Regular visits by a nurse anesthetist (CRNA) provide opportunities for
patients to schedule surgeries when visiting physicians are available. For many procedures
this eliminates the need for patients to travel.
X-Ray Department
Qualified x-ray technicians provide x-ray, ultrasound and mammography studies under the
supervision of a visiting radiologist. Specialized studies are provided by the radiologist
during monthly visits or as otherwise needed.
